We use Soak Wash for all our hand knits and delicate garments. Luckily, we have every scent and scentless stacked up at our office, and with the spring/summer season rolling in we thought this was the ideal time to talk about washing knits for summer storage.
There is nothing worse for a knitter than finding holes in a precious knit after months of storage. These holes are usually created by moths or vermin that find the smallest food particles, sweat, or other tasty things left behind in our woolies. To preserve knits, we recommend laundering your wools properly before packing them away for the summer.
Why We Love Soak Wash:
- Soak is manufactured in a skin care facility, making it hypoallergenic and gentle enough to use on the most sensitive skin types.
- It’s rinse-free, meaning you get all the benefits of a gentle cleanser without needing to rinse out heavy winter knits. The gentle suds bind with the dirt and grease and wash away.
- Soak contains no lanolin, meaning this wash will not buildup on fine fabrics. Even wool does not benefit from the addition of lanolin; it builds up on fibers, making them prone to attracting dirt.
- Other wool wash products use essential oils as their scent base, which can cause an allergic reaction in some users. Soak uses 100% hypoallergenic fragrance, making it the perfect choice for sensitive skin.
A Quick Guide to Hand Washing:
- Wash ALL your hand knits together! Double check that all your knits are colorfast, and fill up a tub, sink, or anything large enough to hold all your knits and let them soak together. This makes less work in the long run.
- TOWELS, TOWELS, TOWELS! Get a bunch of towels for wringing out your knits. Squeeze out as much water as possible while they are still in their wash tub. Wet wool is very delicate and can stretch out easily when it’s saturated. Then carefully pick it up and lay it out in a towel. Roll up the towel and lean or stand on the towel to get as much water out as possible.
- Wash your knits on a sunny day. Take advantage of the warm, sunny spring weather. If you are lucky enough to have a back porch, patio, or place to lay out your knits in the sunshine they will dry extra fast and smell wonderful.
- Be patient! After you lay out your knits walk away and let them dry fully. The last thing you want after taking the time to wash them is to get mildew smell from damp knits in storage. Yuck.
