Scout is "my" yarn in the lineup of new
Kelbourne Woolens yarns we're releasing this year, so it was only fitting that I took the reins in terms of the overall look and feel of the
Scout Collection. Since
Scout is an 100% wool in a wearable DK weight, the classic and bright heathered colors are perfect for sweaters and accessories made for wearing in the outdoors. For the Scout Collection, I took everything I love about a smooth, plied wool yarn - stitch definition, warmth, and wearability - and we used that as the inspiration for the designs in the collection.
The always hilarious and talented Sonja described me on Instagram a little bit ago as the "hat queen", a title I gladly wear with pride. Looking back, I think I have designed at least one hat for every seasonal collection (and don't see a point in stopping any time soon). Of course, as someone who can't stop designing hats, I had to make two for the Scout Collection.
L / Ballard in natural and navy heather. R / Portage in gray heather.
The first hat I designed was Portage, a cabled slouchy beanie with a deep folded brim. I have been really into folded brims lately, this style of slouchy hat has been everywhere the last few winters, and the sweatshirt grey I chose for the design is always a winner.
The cable pattern in Portage is just interesting enough to keep you going, but not so insanely detailed or complicated that you lose your place or constantly have to check the chart. I would highly recommend it for someone new to cabled charts or an experienced knitter looking for a nice portable project with a guaranteed excellent end result.
And, as you have come to expect with Kelbourne Woolens patterns, the Portage PDF has three embedded links to tutorials to aid you with any skills in the pattern you may need a little help with:
I wore my Portage sample on our trip to the Faroe Islands last week with Jaime and Amber from Fancy Tiger Crafts, and it was the perfect accessory for all of our wonderful outdoor adventures!
