Why Perennial? Because we think it will be a yarn you turn to again and again, year after year. With a good mix of luxury and practicality, Perennial is a highly functional and versatile yarn that can serve a variety of needs for both knitters and crocheters alike. Our signature color palette of neutrals, blues, and a few pops of color really shines in this easy care staple yarn perfect for shawls, garments, socks, and fun baby and kid knits, making it the perfect accompaniment to the vast array of fun hand-dyed yarns currently on the market. It is not only a wonderful yarn in its own right, but makes a great yarn to pair with a single skein of something special.
Perennial is a light fingering weight 3-ply blend of 60% superwash Merino wool and 25% silky Suri alpaca, both sourced in South America. Nylon provides additional strength and the practicality we were looking for.
The blend of fibers for Perennial was based on a long-discontinued favorite of ours from
Schaefer Yarns,
Anne. We did quite a bit of sampling and testing for this yarn, and originally designed it as a blend of superwash Merino wool and mohair. Mohair has a good reputation for machine washability and strength, and seemed like an obvious choice. On the recommendation of a trusted friend in the industry, we also sampled the blend with Suri alpaca, known for it’s long, smooth staple fiber. In our machine wash tests, the Suri came out the clear winner. The Suri alpaca also adds a velvety softness to the yarn, which we know everyone loves. This winter we have used Perennial to make baby items, shawls, sweaters, and even socks!
